Jan. 21, 2018 - 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Mark 1:14-20.
With these words, Jesus invites Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew to follow Him and be His disciples. We often speak of the subtleties of translation. In the original Greek in which St. Mark wrote his Gospel, a better translation would be, “Come after me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” It is the beginning of a process.
We are called to that same process. It is not as if it happens quite suddenly. It happens over time, and it is a progression. If we are to be “fishers of men,” we are to be evangelizers and disciples of the Lord, and we are to represent what it means to be part of the Kingdom of God.
Service of Prayer for Unity. The Regina Council of Churches invites you to join in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, on Sunday, Jan 21 at 3pm at First Presbyterian Church, 2170 Albert Street, Regina. The biblical theme for the Week is "Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power" (Exodus 15:6). Selected by the churches of the Caribbean, this theme will be used throughout the world. In Canada, as we reflect on the biblical witness of God's liberating power, we are called to action for reconciliation between our churches and within society, most particularly between Indigenous and other Canadians. Our preacher will be Dr. Michael Capello (U of Regina). Coffee, tea, and educational displays will follow the service. All are welcome. Further information about the Week of Prayer is available at www.weekofprayer.ca or www.ecumenism.net/wpcu/.
